What do the words Social Issues mean to you?

This is the place to air your views on Social Issues to do with women

So, if you have something you’re passionate about regarding women, write in. Let us know what you think and why? Whenever anyone mentions the words Social Issues it’s often overlaid with ‘do-gooder’ accompanied by the vision of a middle class ‘lady’ in twin set and pearls, dishing out tea and sympathy to the needy. Old fashioned I know but, unfortunately still prevalent in many circles.

However, (there’s that word again) in this patriarchal world of ours, add the word ‘women’ to social issues and it’s a whole new ball game. The term ‘do-gooder’ goes out the window, and those who care about Social Issues are viewed as, nothing more than a bloody nuisance or an insidious group of banner waving anarchists, out to destroy the very fabric of society, depending on your point of view.

It doesn’t matter how the 'powers that be' (substitute, government, boss, anyone in control your life) dress it up, in some quarters feminists with a social conscious are still viewed as trouble with a capital T.

‘Hang on’ I hear you shout; ‘we’re all liberated now, aren’t we?’ Well err… no actually we’re not. In case you’ve forgotten, even though women make up half of the world population we still live in this patriarchal society. The world, I’m sad to say, is still run by men for the benefit of, yes you’ve guessed it MEN.

If you don’t agree with me, then answer these questions:

  • Why is Domestic Violence still an unresolved social issue?

  • Why are there still so few women in top jobs?

  • Why are childcare facilities still so inadequate for working mothers?

  • Why do brokers still look for a man behind the women asking for finance?

  • Why are prostitutes still prosecuted but rarely men, when it’s men using the service?

  • Why has British government got it’s knickers in a twist because girls are out stripping boys on the education front.

If you have a point of view on any social issue to do with women then write in and have your say. Tell me what gets you mad and why?

Ok, I can take a hint. I guess you’ve probably had enough of the heavy stuff by now so, why not pop over to the short story page and take a look at some of the stories posted on this site.
